Lily Alone by Jacqueline Wilson

Writer: Jacqueline Wilson
Publisher: Doubleday
Publication date: 3rd Feb 2011
Pages: 304
Edition: Hardback
Received: Gifted

"Lily isn't home ALONE - but she sort of wishes she was; looking after her three younger siblings is a lot of responsibility.
When Mum goes off on holiday with her new boyfriend and her stepdad fails to show up, Lily is determined to keep the family together and show they can cope without any grown-ups. But taking care of 6-year-old twins, her 3-year-old sister and the family's flat feels overwhelming and Lily is worried that school or social services might discover their situation and break up the family. What could be better than to take all the little ones for a camping adventure in the park? Plenty of space to run about, no carpet to vacuum, and surely no chance anyone will guess they're there . . ."

Jacqueline Wilson is one of my favourite authors. I have read all her books apart from The Longest Whale Song, which looks very good (I actually own it now, so I need to hurry up and read it)! Anyway, I was very eager to read this book as it sounds brilliant, and there have been positive reviews. I borrowed it off a friend and loved it!

Lily is eleven years old and has a 6-year-old brother and sister, plus a 3 year-old sister. Her Mum finds a new boyfriend and she goes on holiday with him. She doesn't sort out babysitting very well, as she just leaves a message on her ex husbands (Lily's step dad) phone. He fails to turn up and Lily is held responisible. It is hard, there are so many things to think about; school, food, laundry and keeping their mouths shut so Social Services don't find out. Because if they do, Lily will be seperated from her family.

The siblings are oblivious to what might happen if anybody finds out, which makes looking after them more difficult. Baxter loves his dad but Lily can't stand him. He is brave, bold and a rebel! Bliss is his twin, but they are nothing alike. She is quiet, thoughtful and worries too much, yet she is sensible. Pixie is the cute toddler which everyone is sure to find adorable! Despite Pixie's endless demands for ice cream, she is too lovable. I don't think I can decide my favourite...

Lily eventually decides to take them to the park for the rest of the days. She finds a hollow tree where they can camp in. I love the idea of camping in the beautiful garden Wilson carefully describes. It sounds so pretty, and you can feel as if you are with them watching it.

I recommend this book to 9+. It is a moving and emotional story but a fun read. It could have ended better, and at times I found it a bit babyish, but apart from that, this novel is a must-read. Click here to see the great trailor. Everyone will love this - boys an girls, old and young alike!

Wow, is it the 12th week already?! Well, it is probably, like, the 15th because I have missed some.
Here are this weeks books!

1. Almost True - Keren David

Ruthless killers are hunting Ty so the police move him and his mum to a quiet seaside town. But a horrific attack and a bullet meant for Ty prove that he’s not safe. Any books by Enid Blyton

Harriet Houdini Stunt Bunny: Showbiz Sensation - Tamsyn Murray

My So-Called Afterlife by Tamsyn Murray

Writer: Tamsyn Murray
Publisher: Piccadilly Press
Publication date: 1st Feb 2010
Pages: 176
Edition: Paperback
Received: Library

" "I knew it was time to move on when a tramp peed on my Uggs..." Meet Lucy Shaw. She's not your average fifteen year old - for a start, she's dead. And as if being a ghost wasn't bad enough, she's also trapped haunting the men's toilets on Carnaby Street. So when a lighting engineer called Jeremy walks in and she realises he can see and hear her, she isn't about to let him walk out of her afterlife. Not least until he's updated her on what's happening in her beloved soaps. With Jeremy's help, Lucy escapes the toilet and is soon meeting up with other ghosts, including the perpetually enraged Hep and the snogtastic Ryan. But when Jeremy suggests Lucy track down the man who murdered her, things go down hill. Can Lucy face up to the events of that terrible night? And what will it cost her if she does?
A wonderful debut novel which, as well as being laugh-out-loud funny, is full of insights, compassion, and love."

I was really, really eager to read this book and I eventually found it. It did not disappoint! I loved it. It is not a dark novel, it is a mixture of different genres drawn into one. Romance, humour, and thrilling events.

Lucy Shaw is a fifteen year-old girl murdered six months ago. I loved Lucy, she was probably my favourite charcter. I loved her sarcasm and some parts really make you lol! The afterlife is very similar to reallife, even ghost mobile phones. When you turn into a ghost, your home is where you were murdered. Unfortunatly for Lucy, it is the men's toilets! Nobody can see ghosts, unless you are phychic. Then she meets Jeremy, a middle-aged man who can see her. Once she finds away to get out of the toilets, she meets Hep, Ryan and other teenage ghosts. I particualy loved the Lucy-Ryan parts... :c)

I have no complaints at all, this is one of my favourite reads this year. It is utterly brilliant in every way!

Lucy is forced to remember the night so she can track down her murderer. I wasn't one bit bored in this book, I didn't want it to end! But it had a deserving, heartwarming ending. Well done TM!

This book is now on my top list and I am very eager to read other of Tamsyn's books. My So-Called Haunting is next on my list...

When I Was Joe by Keren David

Writer: Keren David
Publisher: Frances Lincoln Children's Books
Publication date: 7 Jan 2010
Pages: 384 pages
Edition: Paperback
Received: Library

"When Ty witnesses a stabbing, his own life is in danger from the criminals he’s named, and he and his mum have to go into police protection. Ty has a new name, a new look and a cool new image – life as Joe is good, especially when he gets talent spotted as a potential athletics star, special training from an attractive local celebrity and a lot of female attention. But his mum can’t cope with her new life, and the gangsters will stop at nothing to flush them from hiding. Joe’s cracking under extreme pressure, and then he meets a girl with dark secrets of her own."

This book was fantastic! 384 pages may seem a lot, but they whisk past and you can't stop reading! I can't recommend this book enough, so I guess I shall start by a review...

This book is about Tyler who witnesses a knife crime. Him and his family are in danger and they must go under Police Witness Protection Programme. They have to change their identity - name, house, school, and appearance.  As the story unfolds, more secrets are revealed. I particularly loved that even though this story is seen through the eyes of Ty (Joe), not everything is said. There are amazing twists, great characters, romance, real-life events - everything you want in a book.

The main reason this book was so powerful to me is because it was based on real events. It can open your eyes and relaize that this stuff does happen in the world, and not everything gos the way it is planned. This is the perfect YA book!

I wouldn't usually pick up thrillers, and to be honest, the cover looks a bit depressing. However, I got recommended it and saw it in the library, so I picked it up.  It did not disappoint!

My favourite character is Claire. She is really unlikeable at first, but once you see the other side of her....well, she becomes your favourite character! Ty goes to athletics with his personal trainer, Ellie. Ellie's sister is Claire, who is in Tyler's class. I won't give too much away, because her dangerous secret in one of the biggest twists in the book.

The sequel, Almost True, sounds brilliant! I can't wait to read it, as I am dying to know what happends next. It isn't really a cliff hanger, I just want to know where the end of the book leads to.

I recommend this for 12+....so what are you waiting for? BUY THIS NOW!

The Seventeen Secrets Of The Karma Club by Karen McCombie

Writer: Karen McCombie
Publisher: Scholastic
Publication date: June 2008
Pages: 256
Edition: Paperback
Recieved: Libary

"Kezzy and Nell have their own club: a secret society for acts of kindness. It's their mission to cheer people up with golden moments and sparkly surprises. But when Kezzy's mum admits a not-very-golden secret of her own, the Karma Club's best intentions start going weirdly wrong. It's starting to look as if no good deed goes unpunished..."

I have read various other books by Karen including: Marshmallow Magic And The Wild Rose Rouge, An Urgent Message Of Wowness, Wonderland, and part of the the Ally's World series, Stella Ect. series and a book from the Indie Kidd series. And I can tell you they were all brilliant! Including this one.

Kezzy meets Nell and they form the Karma Club. They are the only two members, because it is a secret club. They do secret good deeds which they write about in their gold notebook. Some of their good deeds go well, some of them don't...

For those of you don't know what 'karma' is, there is good karma and bad karma. Basically if you do something good something good will happen to you. Or if you bad...etc.

My favourite charcter is Nell, Kezzy's best friend. She is friendly, creative, and loyal. I dislike Tanya, Kezzy's ex best friend. She starts being really mean to Kezzy, and hangs around with spiteful Robyn just to be popular.

It was really good reading about all the good deeds they do. I won't tell you them, so read it! They were really fun and it encourages everyone to do good deeds. I recommend this for all ages!

My only complaint is that more could of happened. I mean, there was a VERY VERY big twist near the end, but more things could of happened at the beginning/middle.

Overall, this was a uplifting read that you are sure to enjoy. It keeps you hooked and makes you want to read more Karen McCombie books.

Interview with blogger Cliona

I had a interview with a fantastic blogger, Cliona. She writes the brilliant blog, Bookster Reviews. On her (amazing) blog she has great book reviews, interviews, 'cover of the month', challenges, giveaways and much more to enjoy. She is really friendly as you can tell below...

1. How long have you been blogging?

I started blogging in November of 2010. I first discovered blogging by looking at the Threads by Sophia Bennett website and seeing a link to The Mile Long Bookshelf (a brilliant blog by the way!). I was reading that for about a month before I decided to make my own blog.

2. Describle your blog in one word (if possible!).

Emmmm...bookish! (By the way, 'bookish is the describing word. Not 'emmm!')

3. What have you learnt from blogging?

What have I learnt? Hmmm. I've learnt more about books because I pay attention more to details in the book so I can put that into the review. I've also discovered a lot more books from looking at other blogs, some that I have really enjoyed, which is great!

4. What do you hope to achieve in the future for you blog?

I suppose I'd like to improve my reviews and make them more enjoyable to read. And hopefully get more folllowers : ) hehe

5. What do you want to be when you are older?

I know that I probably should say 'author' here, but that's not the answer! Although I would like to write in my spare time, perhaps not as a profession. Journalism would be cool though. I would love to be a doctor or nurse as I find biology and all that fascinating. Theres so many other things that I would love to be too, but the list is too long!

6. If you could be anyone in the world, who would it be?

I'd love to be someone that won an Oscar or a Grammy or something else really big. It would be so fun going down the red carpet all dressed up and signing autographs and then, to top it all off, winning the award! That would be fantastic! But I wouldn't like to do it all the time. Celebrity life isn't for me. I like my privacy!

7. What is your favourite book(s)?

My favourite books are Threads by Sophia Bennett and the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. I love loads of books, though. I know it's strange to be able to pick out a favourite book for many people, because they would have read so many, but the books I picked out really are AMAZING! I'm sure if you read them you would agree! My favourite author, I would say, is Darren Shan. He's absolutely terrific! And he's Irish :)

8. What inspired you to start blogging?

I saw some other book blogs and I said, 'Well, why not? I love reading and this looks like fun, so I will!' And I definitely haven't regretted it!

9. Do you hope to continue with your blog?

Oh yes, I definitely plan on continuing! I love book blogging, it's a great hobby and I recommend it to everyone.

10. QUICK QUESTIONS:

Cats or Dogs?

Cats.
Books or internet?
Books.
Read or write?
Read.
Shop or cinema?
Cinema.
Sophie McKenzie or Malorie Blackman?
Oh, that's so hard!!!!! Emmm...probably...Sophie McKenzie. Girl, Missing absolutely AMAZING and The Medusa Project is brilliant too. But I still LOVE Malorie Blackman!

Thank you, Cliona!
Thanks for the interview Zoe!

I hope you like her blog as much as I do!

OK, so he rides a cool Harley Davidson motorbike, plays in a cool band and has dedicated a song to her. But she's not going to let that rock her relationship with Chris, is she? Besides, Kelly Ann has other things to worry about. * = my favourites
Me and my friends have recently been getting into these series of books, The Roman Mysteries written all by Caroline Lawrence.

I knew zilch about the Romans but I got recommended them. And trust, me you don't need to know anything to read them! They are fun great reads for everyone. You can learn a lot from them, but I love reading them for pleasure.

I can't tell you want happens in the end, but it is fantastic! It is so romantic as their love blossoms. Remember: in Roman times, at 13 years old you could get married! Ah, I won't say anymore....

I recommend starting from the beginning, otherwise it will get confusing. The first two aren't that good, but you can really get into them when you start the 3rd. The Sirens of Surrentum is the more teenage one, as it is where their romances really flurish and involves sex relations. Still, these will be fine for all ages.
The adventure series revolves around Flavia, Jonathan, Nubia and Lupus. Flavia is the daughter of a sea captain, Jonathan is her friend, Nubia is a freed slave-girl, and Lupas can't speak. I think these characters are brilliant in the book, they all go well together and are very interesting.

Finding Violet Park by Jenny Valentine

Writer: Jenny Valentine
Publisher: Harper Collins
Publication date: 2007
Pages: 200
Edition: Paperback
Recieved: Libary

" 'The mini cab office was up a cobbled mews with little flat houses either side. That's where I first met Violet Park, what was left of her. There was a healing centre next door, a pretty smart name for a place with a battered brown door and no proper door handle and stuck-on wooden numbers in the shape of clowns. The 3 of number 13 was a w stuck on sideways and I thought it was kind of sad and I liked it at the same time.'
Sixteen-year-old Lucas Swain becomes intrigued by the urn of ashes left in a cab office. Convinced that its occupant -- Violet Park -- is communicating with him, he contrives to gain possession of the urn, little realising that his quest will take him on a voyage of self-discovery and identity, forcing him to finally confront what happened to his absent (and possibly dead) father!"

I haven't read any book quite like this at all. It was in the libary, so I thought I would borrow it since I have been interested in Jenny Valentine before.

This book is about a teenage boy, Lucas, who lives with his younger brother Jed and sister Mercy. He has a mum, but his dad went missing about five years ago. Nobody knows where or why, it could have been anything. Kidnapped, or just left and abanndoned them all. Even though it has been so long, Lucas still can't help thinking about him. Then there are his grandparents who also apear in the story, Pansy and Norman. And then, of course, their is Violet Park. Dead, yet alive to Lucas. Somehow there is a link towards them both . . .

At first I thought Lucas was a little bit strange. I mean, stealing ashes of a dead old lady from the taxi company. But as it went along I though this book is incredible. It is so unique, I don't think anybody else could have thought of this great plot.

I won't tell you too much because that would give a lot away, but I think this story is really powerful. It sends out a good message about a) the elderly b) adults make mistakes too. You get hooked into the story and you want to know what happens in the end. Usually you can guess endings in books, but in this case you can't!

At the end they gave a sneak peak of Jenny's other book, Broken Soup. This sounds even better!

Which Cover? #2

Hi everyone,
This is the March post of Which Cover? This month it is the Twilight covers, since vampires seem to be the craze now! Simply debate which cover you like the best in the comments :-)

I think this is quite a hard one, because they are all quite similar but if I had to choose (btw, I have only read the first one) it would be New Moon, because the flower is gorgeous.

Interview with blogger, Rachel

Today I got the chance to interview an amazing blogger Rachel from Booktastic Reviews. We both interviewed each other, to see her interview on me click here. She is a really friendly person and her blog is one of my favourites. I hope you like her blog as much as I do!

Hi, If you got sent a book to review and you didn't like it, would you still review it honestly?
I would like to think I would. I sort of do. I have reviewed a book before which I wasn't particularly sure what I felt about it so I mentioned that in my review. Does that count as honesty? If I have a small problem with a book I also mention that, but usually (even with books that I have mixed feelings about) I follow the bad point up with something good. If I don't like a book there is a good chance other people will so I try to involve a lot of information.

Do you have any other blogs and what are they?
I have a daily blog, The Story of My Life, which I ramble on about what goes on in my general life but I don't use it nearly as much as I use Booktastic Reviews. Don't tell anyone but I slightly prefer reading about somebody else's life in a book (they usually have powers or go on a dangerous and thrilling quest)!

What is coming soon for your blog?
More reviews, more recommendations, more bookish memes, more interviews, more sneak peeks, more everything really! I have also been discussing with a friend about a monthly activity that we might be starting but I don't want to tell you any more because it's a surprise!

Why did you start blogging?
There is actually a couple of reasons. I was browsing through my friend's book blog and I thought, why don't I do that? It seemed fun - which it is, blogging books is great - and a great way to share my opinions and recommendations of books.

If you had one day to live, what would you do?
I think I would like to sky dive. Anything thrilling really: bungee jumping, free climbing, rock climbing, explore the amazon rainforest - I don't know why really but after reading Journey To The River Sea by Eva Ibbotson I just really think it would be cool to see what it would be like in the Amazon Rainforest, lol.

If you were running out of a burning building (your home) which two books would you grab and why?
Hmmm, this is a hard one. Based on what is on my bookshelves the first one I would grab would probably be, Harry Potter and The Philosophers Stone because I am never tired of reading J.K Rowling's creation. I have read every book in the Harry Potter books about 5 times each! The second book would be... oh this is too hard! There is so many I would love to pick... Maybe The Star of Kazan by Eva Ibbotson or Lily Alone by Jacqueline Wilson... mmm or maybe a book which I haven't got on to reading yet! I don't think I can pick but I will make myself. Harry Potter and The Philosophers Stone by J.K Rowling and The Star of Kazan by Eva Ibbotson.

What is your ideal future career?
Oh there is a long list for this one, lol. Maybe a journalist, an equine therapist, a writer or someone who works at an animal shelter. Maybe I could juggle them all... Not likely!

What inspired you to create a blog?
This one is simple. My friends! They all have fantastic blogs so I decided to make one too.

You read books, but do you write them?
Sometimes. Depends what mood I am in. I like to write when I am bored or when I just feel like putting pen to paper. I usually start writing a novel but never finish it. My imagination is wild so I tend to write fantasy.

If you could spend a day with anyone in the world who would it be (dead or alive)?
Possibly, Jacqueline Wilson. I would just love to watch her at work and watch how her imagination flows on to the paper so easily.

Quick Questions
Cats or Dogs: Dogs. I have two of my own (Taz and Otto) so I can't possibly choose cats.

TV or Internet:  Internet. I spend way to much time on the computer though...

Read or Write: Read. For the simple reason that will help my imagination for writing later on.

Crisps or Chocolate: Crisps. I am a chocoholic though but if I'm honest I love a good pack of Walkers Crisps.

Harry Potter or Gallagher Girls: Harry Potter. For the simple reason I am only half way through my first Gallagher Girls book.

Thanks Rachel!
This was really fun to do! Great questions, thanks for interviewing me! :o)
